While we work hard to keep you informed about the Midcoast community, how citizens cope and thrive, we need your help, too. Thanks to our readers and especially our supporters who help to keep PenBayPilot.com an open and accessible community hub. The opera house has been in operation since it was built in 1894. The beautiful venue has hosted everything from grand balls in the Victorian era, early 1900s silent movies with orchestra music and dancing, town hall meetings, and Firemen’s Balls in the ‘30s and ‘40s.

The no-fee tickets are a great opportunity to expand your cultural and musical horizons! Its location in downtown Camden is just a half-mile away from the Camden Maine Stay Inn, which makes it a great addition to your Midcoast Maine itinerary. On November 19, 1892, a fire swept through downtown Camden, destroying a large number of wood-frame commercial structures, including the town offices, numerous fraternal meeting facilities, and the town's opera house. The Opera House was one of the most prominent buildings constructed in the wake of the fire, designed by Lewiston architect Elmer I. Thomas and completed in 1893.

For us, this also includes more than 200 town-sponsored meetings, events, and community gatherings per year. For more than a century, the Camden Opera House has been a first-class event venue in Midcoast Maine. This venue hosts a variety of events like live music performances, comedy shows, and seminars. The opera house is a community staple that brings the performing arts to Midcoast Maine’s locals and visitors at no charge. That’s right, all of the tickets to the shows at this venue are completely free.

Opened in 1894 and on the National Register of Historic Places, The Camden Opera House is a 489-seat auditorium, including two conference and meeting rooms, a lounge and mini-theater -- all served by elevator. Camden’s annual Christmas-by-the-Sea is back the first weekend of December, and the opera house looks forward to hosting the annual “Nutcracker” by the local Atlantic Ballet Company. The Camden Women’s Club was the first community theater group, presenting “The King and I” and “Finian’s Rainbow” to packed houses. The building was designed to house not just town offices and the theater, but meeting spaces for local business organizations and the local post office, as well as two retail storefronts. In 1932, the former post office space, facing Washington Street, was remodeled to serve as Camden town offices. Willis Carleton, a lifelong resident of Rockport decorated the interior, including stereo relief gold and white on the stage arch, balcony front, and loge boxes. The auditorium itself measures 36 feet by 33 feet and boasted a kitchen, ticket office and checkroom to the left of the main landing; on the right were individual rooms.
